About Me

I was born in England but have lived all over the world; 4 years in Germany and 1 year in the Sultanate of Oman (military service); 1 and 1/2 years in Costa Rica; 4 years in the South of France and 30 odd years living in the US (California, Nevada, Hawaii, Florida, Oregon, Washington state and currently in Denver, Colorado).  I’ve also spent considerable time in Asia (Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan and Thailand) and have travelled extensively in Western Europe.  I must have some gypsy blood in me.  My brother is half-convinced I’m in witness protection; the only reason he’s not 100% sure is that I haven’t changed my name or profession.

911TurboI’ve always been a car nut and love to drive fast, exotic cars.  Fortunately for me, there is a company called Oxotic (www.oxotic.com) in Golden that has a stable of supercars that you can take out for a 15, 35, 65 or 125 mile drive through the Golden Gate State Park on twisty, canyon roads.  All the cars have video cameras installed so you get a video of your drive to remember the experience.  So far I’ve driven a Lamborghini Gallardo AWD; a McLaren convertible, a Bentley Turbo Mulsanne, a Lamborghini Spyder, a Mercedes AMG and a Porsche 911 Turbo (which is definitely my favorite car of all time, much to my surprise because I’ve never been a Porsche fan).  It’s a wild, wild ride and some of the most fun I’ve ever had.

For recreation I play table tennis, chess, read voraciously and watch movies.  I rarely go to the movies themselves any more and prefer to wait until they are released on DVD so I can watch them at home, in comfort on a big screen TV, without having to put up with people talking, munching popcorn noisily and other bad, inconsiderate behaviors.

Mt. Cook, South IslandI travel quite a bit on business but when I do, rarely take time to explore where I am.  However, when I do travel on vacation, I’m an avid photographer (mostly landscapes).  My favorite place in the world is New Zealand where I was fortunate enough to be able to spend 3 months in 2013.  The South Island is truly one of the most spectacularly beautiful places in the world; I spent 10 days driving the whole island and ended up with some spectacular photographs; (Click on the photograph of Mount Cook to visit my SmugMug collection of New Zealand photographs)

I’m planning on heading down to New Zealand again for several months in 2017, this time to explore the North Island.  One of the places that I’m most excited to visit, as a huge fan of Art Deco, is Napier which is the Art Deco capital of the world . (I’ll post more photographs, promise!)

Most of my time is actually spent at the computer, either working on custom projects or writing articles and blog posts.

MeBook4I have already published two ebooks and have two others in various stages of development. One is on FileMaker and the other is on transforming businesses. I really enjoy the writing process although sometimes, it is extremely hard especially when the goal is to entertain as much as educate.  Too many ‘technical’ books are a dry read and send people to sleep so I try very hard to not have that be the case with my books.

Rick WhelanFinally, I’ve also made a series of animated films under the category of Funny Business which demonstrate some of the crazy things I’ve seen, and experienced, in my time as a FileMaker developer.  I hope you’ll get a few laughs out of them and, who knows, some of them may ring true with you.  (BTW the celebrity voices of John Cleese, Billy Connolly and Jack Nicholson were all voiced by Rick Whelan.  (Click on his photo to go to his web site and tell him I sent you.  He’s a great guy and does terrific work).

I’ve been helping business for the past 28 years, primarily by developing custom solutions to streamline the business.   As an outsider, I often see things that are generally overlooked, and part of what I do is to look out for those things, and then bring them to the right peoples attention.  As a business owner, I’ve discovered what to look for; as a developer, I know exactly what is possible, and what isn’t, and am often able to deliver solutions that they had previously thought impossible.

I’ve been a banker, a soldier (military intelligence – yes, I’m aware that is an oxymoron); a croupier, a professional poker player, an art dealer, a business owner & manager and a FileMaker developer (since 1987 which, sometimes, makes me feel old).  I love what I do and I consider myself incredibly lucky to be able to make a living doing it.  A great part of the joy and my job satisfaction is seeing businesses being transformed through the proper use of technology.
