YouTube or Vimeo?

Up until very recently, I’ve posted all of the different videos that I’ve made to my channel at YouTube.com and, for the most part, it is a great place to do so.

However, I now have an account, a paid one admittedly, with Vimeo and am posting new videos there instead of YouTube.  There is a very simple reason for this; if, for any reason, I need to replace a video, with Vimeo I just do it; the url stays the same and none of the comments, etc., are lost unlike YouTube where you can only delete an existing video and upload a new one and, if you’ve publicized the video, you then have to repost it and hope that people see that.

Realistically, for the most part, this won’t make a difference and how often do you need to replace a video anyway?  But, if you are going to be producing a lot of video content, then it might make a huge difference and is worth the small amount of money that Vimeo charges.

Just my 2¢.

Staying on videos for the moment, if you are using YouTube and you want to display a video on your web site, there are two ways to do it.  Below the video, you will see a Share option and if you click on that, you get a number of different options.  Many websites, LinkedIn, for example, want you to insert the Embed code which is available under the Share Option.  (Below that option is Show More, where you can adjust the video size (which is immediately reflected in the Embed code).  Copy that, go to your web page, change the view to text and then paste.  your video is now embedded into the page which means it plays within your web site and doesn’t head off to YouTube.

If you knew this, great but if you didn’t, it may come in useful.
