My Life

I’ve had an incredible life.

I’ve been traveling the world since I was 20 and have lived in Germany, the Sultanate of Oman, Costa Rica, the south of France and have spent 30 years living in the US.  I currently live in Denver, Colorado which is the 9th state that I’ve lived in.  Of all the places in the US that I have lived, or visited, Denver is, by far, my favorite.  I don’t know whether it’s the magnificent scenery or the wide open spaces or the climate or the people or maybe it’s a combination of all of the above, but Denver is a fantastic place to live.  Of course, I’m not the only person to come to that conclusion which is why it’s a very expensive place to live with sky-high rents but it’s definitely worth it.

I’ve had a variety of careers starting with 3 years in banking after I left school.  From there I joined the British Army and spent the next 6 years with the Intelligence Corps serving in Germany and the Middle East.  The Army taught me a lot of things, the most useful being able to type very quickly and languages have also come in handy.

When I left the Army in 1978, I took a year off to travel.  After that, I became a croupier and dealt Blackjack in some of London’s most exclusive casinos for the next couple of years before moving to the US where I found work, at Lake Tahoe, as a poker dealer.  When I wasn’t dealing poker, I was often found playing it and, after a while, realized that I could make more money playing than dealing so I played professionally for a year.  Although it was good money, the lifestyle (playing 12 hours a day, or longer, 7 days a week; not eating properly and living on coffee and adrenalin) took its toll and I made a career change by becoming a salesperson for a local art gallery.  That took me from Lake Tahoe to Hawaii (which I hated having a bad case of ‘island fever’) and from there to San Francisco and New York.

In 1987 I changed careers again and became a software developer and I’ve been doing that ever since.  I took a couple of years off from doing that full time to manage a very large (5,500 sq. ft.) art gallery at The Forum Shops in Las Vegas
