The times they have a changed

The images above are of two completely different items and you might wonder what they have in common. In fact, they have nothing in common other than the loaf of bread is approximately the same size as the first hard drive which I bought in 1987 to go with my first computer, the Mac Plus.

The hard drive was 10MB. Yes, that’s right. 10 Megabytes. When I bought it, it cost $1000 which was a lot of money and, to be perfectly honest, I never thought that I would fill it up. Boy, was I wrong about that.

Fast forward 30 years to the image on the right which is a 32Gb (32,000MB) thumb drive which cost under $15 and which is so small that I’m sure I’m going to lose it very quickly. (I also have 5TB of data and need to buy more storage space).

The image below shows the size comparison between the two.

3200 times the capacity; 1/85 of the cost; 1/1000th of the size.

Now this post has no other purpose than to perhaps show the younger generation how times have changed and, of course, I think it is interesting to see how far we’ve come and wonder how much further we can go.
